The Steam Railroading Class of 2002

Two Day "Hands-On" Steam Engineering Course 2002

The Boothbay Railway Village held a two-day course on October 19 & 20, on the operation and theory of the coal-fired steam locomotive. Included in this fascinating educational experience was the opportunity to participate in "hands-on" training with the museum's vintage locomotive under the supervision of qualified museum staff.

The course included, not only those with no or little knowledge of the operation of steam engines, but also those with some knowledge and a desire to enhance their understanding of steam locomotives.

There was a one-day session of theory and understanding, then a second session of actual locomotive operation. This was a rare and exciting opportunity for those interested in getting a valuable experience of steam engines and steam railroading.

We start with classroom instruction in the Museum's historic 1847 Town Hall

We spend some time in the Museum's workshop for some introduction to the locomotives.

Concentration is intense in the early going, applying our theoretical knowledge to actual practice.

Injecting water into the boiler requires special attention......especially the first time.

A perfect day for learning about and experiencing steam railroading at the Boothbay Railway Village.
