Could this be the first efforts at locomotion? This is illustrative of the advantage gained by rails over regular terrain...regardless of the type of power utilized. The two foot railroads of Maine used many different forms of power. This adaptation shows Yankee ingenuity at its finest. For short runs or small loads, this was more practical than sending a steam train.

 

A great wintertime photo taken at the turn of the century, depicts a Maine two foot gauge locomotive with plow and flanger (directly behind engine) plus passenger cars.
